A short time after moving in, Shiri refused to walk on her own, despite many attempts to help improve her ability to walk, and the staff was compelled to move her to a room on the lower floor. This was a step back for Shiri, and the staff was not prepared to accept it.
One morning, one of the counselors woke up with a realization: If the staff was convinced that Shiri could walk, she would walk! When the shifts changed that evening, she told the incoming staff that Shiri had gone up the stairs. The night counselor was pleased to hear the news, and when it came time to get ready for bed, she encouraged Shiri to go upstairs to take a shower on the second floor – crawling slowly on the stairs. After two hours (!), the task was complete. Shiri was upstairs! The morning staff heard the news with great excitement, and they continued to push her further and further.
Today, Shiri walks independently, without any assistive equipment.
A tremendous pat on the back to the professional and dedicated counselors of the Supported Housing program!
