Chanukah Party

On Chanukah of 2010, we surprised the family members of the Community-based Living Program residents with a Chanukah party hosted by the residents themselves.

“The Secret of the Flame” – so the special evening was named, alluding to the spark of potential hidden within each Seeach Sod student that can be ignited into a blazing flame with the proper nurturing and the right environment. Just as the olive oil is poured and the wicks prepared in advance so that the flame will eventually burn on its own, so too, the staff at Seeach Sod provides its students with the means to shine brightly by leading independent, productive lives, each according to his level.

One of the main objectives of the party was to strengthen the bond between the residents and their families.

A great deal of thought was invested in planning every aspect of this evening. But despite all the preparations, no one could have imagined how successful and meaningful the party would end up being. Every single resident sat with prince-like dignity among his relatives, his face suffused with pride as he welcomed them warmly to “his” party.

About a hundred families got together in five different small halls, in order to preserve a warm, homely atmosphere. Parents, grandparents, siblings, siblings in law and aunts and uncles were treated to a lavish array of cake and refreshments, as well as a rich, entertaining program. “It’s been years since I’ve seen my Moishy shine like this,” said one emotional mother at the end of the evening. “He was so calm and enjoyed sitting with us for a long time without getting up even once to seek other distractions…”

The highlight of the party was a special exhibition that had been painstakingly put together by the apartment coordinators and counselors, with the active participation of the residents. At the end of the party, the winning exhibit was announced based on the audience’s judgment and the evening concluded with a joyous round of singing and dancing.

The flames that were ignited on that seventh night of Chanukah will, with help from Above, continue to glow throughout the year!
